JUNE 10, 1994 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 9

OBITUARIES

Josh Steier

Indefatigable hammer dulcimer player and long-term HIV survivor Joshua Steier died of PML on May 28, 1994.

Josh was one of the best known AIDS activists in Cleveland. Diagnosed full-blown in 1987, Josh devoted his remaining time to a musical career, playing regularly with two early-music bands, Mud In Yer Eye and Toad in the Hole, and made additional solo appearances. He was part of the original group of people who founded the Living Room; he did volunteer work and speaking engagements for the Health Issues Taskforce for many years; and he was an early and enthusiastic supporter of ACT UP Cleveland. One of the three positions of the Citizens' Committee on AIDS/HIV for PLWA's was filled by Josh who attended every meeting, and served through the completion of the committee's final report.

Josh will be remembered by a remarkable diversity of people in Cleveland whom he touched with his interests in Contraand Morse dancing, early music, cooking, my-

cology, and arcane detail from throughout the span of history. His clinical knowledge and experience of the medical aspects of AIDS served as an example to many persons in the HIV community, many of whom Josh in fact survived.

A memorial service was held at Trinity Cathedral on June 2; music (without hammer dulcimer) was provided by Mud In Yer Eye.

Mark E. Selby, 30

Mark E. Selby died Thursday, May 26 of AIDS-related non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Mark was born May 30, 1963. He is sur-

vived by his mother Patricia Selby, grandparents Kirk and Frances Fitzpatrick, sister and brother-in-law Kerry and Mike Ott, a niece and nephew and caring friend Roy M. Freeman IV.

Mark was a talented chef, carpenter, plumber and all-around handyman who lived for several years in Atlanta. Mark will always be remembered as a fiercely independent, stubborn perfectionist whose my-wayor-no-way attitude and cutting humor could upset even the closest of family and friends. But his immense good heartedness and genuine affection for all his family and friends made even his faults loveable.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 28. Mark will be missed by his family and all his many friends. His family extends special thanks to Tom, Bill and Danny for the extra effort they made to help ease the pain of Mark's death.
